Pope John Paul II has named a new bishop for Palm Beach, Florida, to succeed a prelate who resigned over a sex-abuse scandal.
Bishop Sean Patrick O’Malley of Fall River, Massachusetts has been appointed to the See.
He succeeds Bishop Anthony O’Connell, who quit earlier this year after admitting that he molested a former seminarian in the 1970’s.
Bishop-elect O’Malley, a Franciscan Capuchin, was ordained coadjutor bishop of St Thomas in the Virgin Island in 1984 and the following year became ordinary of the Caribbean diocese.
The Palm Beach diocese has been run by an interim bishop since Bishop O’Connell resigned.
