It is time for thee, Lord, to work: for they have made void thy law. (Ps. 119:126)
Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the Lord of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the Lord of hosts. (Zech. 7:12)
The story is told of an Indian Chief, who, on being presented to Queen Victoria, enquired: "What is the secret of England's greatness?" The Queen asked the attendant at her side to bring the Bible, and on opening it said: "This is the secret of England's greatness."
Today the United Kingdom is in steep decline. Apostasy, crime, corruption, depravity, drug-taking, debt, family breakdown, idolatry, illegitimacy, indecency, murder, profligacy, perversion and violence are rampant. Decisions from the European and British Courts alike are allowing bureaucrats, homosexuals, feminists, ecumenists and leaders of non-Christian faiths to impose their definition of 'morality' on the British people. The media – television, radio and newspapers – are actively assisting the process of limiting dissent by channelling discussion and opinion along certain predetermined lines. Standards of behaviour and honesty in government and in society are rapidly deteriorating, and levels of intelligence, knowledge and literacy are declining from generation to generation.
In 1930, before Britain's rapid social and moral deterioration took hold, Sir Charles Marston wrote in the Daily Telegraph: "The Bible as a guide is our charter of freedom, its teaching has made us great and perchance can alone keep us great."
The Christian position is that all authority comes only from God (Ps. 24:1). Today, by contrast, our nation no longer looks to Almighty God in making its legislation, but decides on its own authority what is right and what is wrong.
The Biblical Protestant Constitution of the United Kingdom
It is seldom appreciated today that the Constitution of the United Kingdom is specifically Christian and totally in accord with Biblical law. Every British Monarch since Alfred the Great (849-899) has acknowledged Almighty God as sovereign over the Realm, and every British Monarch since Edgar (959-975) has been anointed by God to rule in the Name of Christ. It was King Alfred who appended the Ten Commandments to the Statute Book of the Realm: there they still remain today; and the history of Britain demonstrates that there is a definite correlation between the measure of her prosperity and safety on the one hand and the extent to which she respected and adhered to those divine Laws on the other.
For a long time prior to the sixteenth century England was in a state of gross darkness as to the knowledge of God and His Word, languishing under the dominion of the Church of Rome, which proscribed the Bible, and under the assumed power and authority of the Pope; but God in His sovereign purposes had designs of mercy towards this Nation in delivering her from that grievous ignorance and bondage. In His providence He raised up men enlightened by the Holy Spirit to perceive, expose and resist the evils of Popery – men who saw the necessity for the people to have the Scriptures in their own language; men who laboured, suffered and were martyred to have the Bible translated into English.
When Britain became Protestant at the time of the Reformation and took the Word of God as her guide, allowing the principles of the Bible to regulate all her actions and legislation, she enjoyed the favour of Heaven, and became great; her arms prevailed, and the British Constitution and British laws were the admiration and praise of all the earth.
By means of the Bill of Rights (1689) and the Act of Settlement (1701) Britain built ramparts around her freedom from Romanism and its hatred of Biblical law. That legislation pronounced it "inconsistent with the safety and welfare of this Protestant Kingdom to be governed by a Popish Prince, or any King or Queen marrying a Papist" and required that every English Sovereign, on coming to the Throne, proclaim the Romish mass to be "superstitious and idolatrous".
On June 2, 1953, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was not simply 'crowned' but also 'anointed' as Monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. She was asked to make certain solemn promises to God and the people that she would "maintain the Laws of God and the true profession of the Gospel". She also undertook "to maintain in the United Kingdom the Protestant Reformed Religion established by law", and "to govern the peoples of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland according to their respective laws and customs". She received, as a reinforcement of that promise, the Holy Bible as "the rule for the whole life and government of Christian Princes". It was understood through this ceremony that the laws and customs of the United Kingdom were to be found in the Holy Bible, and that they were not to be changed, but that the people were to be governed by them alone. At one point during the ceremony, the Orb from the Crown Jewels was presented to the Queen, accompanied by the words: "Receive this Orb set under the Cross, and remember that the whole world is subject to the Power and Empire of Christ our Redeemer."
The Re-advancement of Popery in the United Kingdom
Nevertheless, Her Majesty's successive Governments did not execute justice and mercy in accordance with the Laws of God, and the principal reason for their default lies, as throughout British history, in their increasing appeasement of Popery.
From the Decrees of the Council of Trent to the Syllabus of Pius IX and beyond, it is the Popes who, of all tyrants and despots, have continuously sought to change times and laws. Rev. Robert Gault put it succinctly in his Prize Essay of the Evangelical Alliance: "Has not Rome set herself above all law, whether proceeding from God or man? Every verse of Scripture must remain mute until Rome grants it liberty of speech; and every rule, laid down by either prince or people, is invalid, unless it exactly square[s] with Popish views, and harmonize[s] with Popish traditions."1
Popery is the grossest form of idolatry, and the more closely a nation embraces Popery, the further it distances itself from the Laws of God; for Rome is the enemy of the Bible, the extinguisher of Gospel light, the slave-master of the human mind and the usurper of the sovereignty of Almighty God. It is therefore to be expected that communion with Rome is both the major catalyst in the decline of any Biblical Christian nation and the major sin by which God judges that nation.
The late J.C. Philpot, writing in 1869, noted in how many ways Popery was again advancing, subtly infiltrating every stratum of life and legislation, and attacking the great Protestant army of English hearts and English hands which had kept back the Papal forces since the Reformation. He solemnly warned against the return of a time when "Rome might be dominant without being universal, hold the sway in Church and State, and yet not permeate the whole mass; accept submission and acquiescence without insisting on the sworn allegiance of conversion".2
How accurate a prophecy of the situation today, when Popery through the Ecumenical Movement has blinded and gained control of so many nominally Protestant denominations and been able to subvert them and bend them to her will without carrying out the forcible conversions enabled by her power of yesteryear! A most striking example of this is the recent defection of the Lutheran World Federation from the fundamental Reformation principle of justification by faith alone, for it illustrates how the Vatican can "integrate Protestant church office-bearers into the structure of the Roman Catholic hierarchy"3 by lifting its curse on Lutherans while still retaining its condemnation of Luther.
We need not describe here in detail the advances made by Popery in this country today: its infernal ubiquitousness is evident in politics, legislation, the media, business, organised crime, the growing ritualism and apostasy of our Churches, and above all in the current attack on the British Protestant Constitution.
The Return of National Sin in the United Kingdom
Whether Her Majesty's successive Governments have executed justice with mercy in accordance with the Laws of God, or legislated in opposition to those Laws and therefore in defiance of them, can be ascertained by comparing the legislation found on Britain's statute books today with the Divine Legislation still appended, as a reminder of God's promises, to the Statute Book of the Realm.
They have broken the divine commandment to have "no other gods before me" and granted equality to heathen religions. Prince Charles has declared himself "defender of the faiths" (plural). SNP leader Alex Salmond says the new Scottish Parliament should have a multi-faith approach to worship and accommodate daily prayers and worship to reflect all religions.
They have instituted the graven imagery of Popery in our churches and tolerated, appeased and embraced the idolatry of Rome.
They have allowed our media to become cesspools of cursing and blasphemy against the name of God and to promote non-Christian faiths.
They have legislated to profane the Sabbath Day by allowing our shops and businesses to open on Sundays, forgetting the divine commandment to keep the Lord's Day holy.
They have institutionalised the dishonouring of every father and mother by passing laws which destroy the family, respect so-called single parenthood, and tolerate homosexuality, lesbianism and other forms of moral and sexual perversion.
They have freed killers, murderers and terrorists instead of hanging them, and legalised the killing of more unborn children than the number of Jews murdered by the Nazis.
They have passed laws promoting adultery in all its forms, legalised prostitution, and defiled our cities with sex shops.
They have robbed the poor and needy, favoured the rich, stolen the wealth of the people and paid it into the coffers of the European Union in the full knowledge that they are progressively destroying British sovereignty.
They have bred a race of arrogant, incompetent and unpatriotic politicians who have knowingly and deliberately lied through their teeth to the British people to protect their own interests and their treacherous goals. Witness the worthless promises of Mr. Blair to the people of Northern Ireland at the last referendum.
They have formalised the coveting of riches by promoting gambling on a hitherto unknown scale through the National Lottery, thus undermining the Protestant work ethic which made this Nation great.
A promise and a warning
Let us remember God's promise to Joshua:
"This Book of the Law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night; that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein; for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success." (Joshua 1:8)
Deuteronomy 28 and the last part of Psalm 144 mention some of the specific promises of that blessing made to those nations which keep God's Statutes: they included social stability; economic prosperity in manufacturing, trade and agriculture; a sound and strong family base, with children in whom parents could delight; an absence of crime, the presence of justice, and strength in foreign affairs.
The latter part of Deuteronomy, however, also describes the consequences for a nation of rebelling against these Divine Statutes – a curse in every one of these matters. That Britain today stands under such a curse for her rebellion against the laws of God enshrined on her Statute Book of the Realm is clear: social injustice is rampant; economic prosperity on the wane; her once mighty shipyards progressively becoming idle; her factories closing down; her agriculture ravaged by BSE and a new foot-and-mouth epidemic; her fishing industries subservient to foreign European decrees; her Parliament a glorified provincial legislature of the European Union; her children in rebellion against their parents; and her youth blighted by drugs and alcohol; crime statistics worsening yearly; truth and justice turned on their heads; her influence in world affairs diminished as never before.
"Will not God be avenged on such a nation as this?" (Jer. 9:29)
When nations turn from God, He calls them to national repentance. When Israel and Judah practised the idolatry of Samaria, the Lord testified against them: "Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers." (2 Kings 17:13) We are told, however, that they "would not hear, but hardened their necks […] and they rejected his statutes […] and left all the commandments of the Lord their God […] and went after the heathen that were round about them." (2 Kings 17:14-15). There were dire consequences: the Lord was "very angry […] and removed them out of his sight […] and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of spoilers". (2 Kings 17:18-20)
The scourge of foot-and-mouth disease is a punishment on the British people for their national sins and those of their religious and political leaders, and like ancient Israel they are all stubbornly refusing to repent. The writing is on the wall: "Woe to them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed." (Is. 10:1)
Early in April 2001, Dr. Paisley urged Prime Minister Tony Blair to call on the Queen hold a national day of prayer for repentance and deliverance "in this crisis of the scourge of foot-and-mouth disease"; but arrogant, Vatican-courting Blair is no Churchill, and the reaction in Parliament – sneers and hissing – was a measure of the gravity of this Nation's departure from God.
Let me tell Mr. Blair and the ecumenical drivellers who would drag this country once again into the mire of Romanism: "God is not mocked." (Gal. 6:7) If this Parliament and this nation and this people do not repent and turn from their wickedness, the consequences may be of mediaeval proportions. Britain, chosen to bring the Bible to the uttermost parts of the earth, and blessed throughout history above all nations, is answerable more than any other nation to God. The Bible abounds in examples of plagues sent by God as a punishment for national sins. This country had better take heed.
